Frequently asked questions
- How do I play?
- Tap two tiles with the same character. They clear if they can be joined by a path of no more than three straight lines that does not cross other tiles. Clear the whole board to win.
- What is the difference between Timed and Relaxed?
- Timed rounds run on a three-minute clock, with three hints and two shuffles, and count for the leaderboard. Each match puts a second back on the clock unless you turn that off in Settings. Relaxed rounds have no clock and unlimited hints, still keep score, and are not ranked.
- What is Learn mode?
- Learn mode turns off the timer and the score. Press and hold a tile to open a study card with the character's stroke order, readings, meaning, study level and example words. It is available for Chinese and Japanese characters.
- Why do some characters have no stroke animation?
- Stroke order is included for every character in the JLPT, Jōyō and HSK 1 to 6 lists, and for 98.5% of all hanzi and 92% of all kanji. The rest are rare characters that no open source draws yet. Their study card still shows readings and meaning.
- Do I need an internet connection?
- No for solo play, Learn mode and stroke order. Example words, multiplayer and the leaderboard need a connection.
- How do I play with friends?
- Open Multiplayer from the main menu, host a room for 2 to 4 players and share the six-character code. Everyone races on the same board.
- How do I turn notifications on or off?
- In iOS Settings, open Notifications, then GlyphLink. GlyphLink only sends notifications if you allowed them.
- How do I delete my account?
- In the app, open Settings, then Account, and choose Delete Account. It removes the account, its scores and its leaderboard rows from our server.
- What is the App Clip?
- A small version of GlyphLink that opens instantly from a link, without installing the full app, for a quick round. It works offline and collects no data.
